If you love being in the workshop, and also the sewing studio, then this weekend upholstery workshop is for you! Whether you are interested up-cycling something for your house, or being highly creative by making art, renovating a family heirloom like in The Repair Shop you will get a comprehensive experience at The Stitchery with tutor Andy Whittle (bio below).
In this boutique class of no more than 4 students you'll learn the fundamentals of pulling a chair apart and then putting it back together for a new lease on life.
Please note: this is a two day course, 6 hours each day.
The workshop starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm each day.
What you need to bring along:
- Your chair - please note it needs to be on the smaller side, by that we mean don't bring your sofa! The Stitchery has 17 steps you need to navigate and a 90 degree door angle in a narrow hallway making long and large items challenging to get into the premise.
- Your final upholstery fabric and decorative elements you might want to add to finish your project
- Your lunch. Tea, coffee, herbal tea, trim milk, oat milk, and snacks will be available throughout the course. We have a fridge and a microwave. Alternatively Porirua city centre is a 1 minute drive around the corner.
This course is aimed at people with an interest in refurbishing a piece to its former glory. The emphasis is on learning new skills and hopefully having some fun while meeting likeminded people along the way. If you require a payment plan please get in contact with us (email@example.com). We are able to split the payment via invoicing. You will need to provide a $200 deposit to secure your spot. After that we will send 2 following invoices of $200 each fortnight. Failure to pay on time will result in 2% interest being added each day the payment is overdue.
Refunds and cancellations
You will receive a full refund if you cancel your booking 7 days before the commencement of the course. A 50% refund will be returned if you need to cancel your booking within the 7 days of the course starting. If you cancel on the day or are a no show, no refund will be provided. If The Stitchery is required to cancel this course due to COVID-19 escalation, or the tutor is unwell, we will provide a full refund.
My father started his upholstery business the same year I was born in 197something back in Liverpool. By the time I was 10 I had caught the bug and every school holiday I was in his workshop stripping furniture looking for buried treasure. It's amazing what you can find down the back of an old settee. At eighteen I had left school and was studying Furniture full time doing a Diploma. At the end of my learning I went into partnership with my dad. Our customers were wide ranging from domestic to hotels, clubs, restaurants, cathedrals and we even upholstered a chair for the Queen! My main love is in antiques - they just don't make things like that anymore.
10 years ago my family and I decided to move to New Zealand. I am currently working as Re-upholstery manager for Kadima furniture in Seaview, Lower Hutt. Around 8 years ago I started teaching Upholstery night classes in Onslow before they moved it to Wellington High. There's nothing I enjoy more than seeing the looks of satisfaction and pride on students faces when they complete the challenge of making something old look brand new.
